The illustrations are endearing and quite sweet. The full page illustrations are wonderful. Amongst the illustrations are some great little morsels of truth and advice about "upping your reading quota." Whether you are new to your book obsession or a seasoned hoarder, this is a nice break and pays homage to all books and readers!

I found out about this book via a bookstore newsletter, so I decided to take a chance and order it. I feel as though the author and I are kindred spirits. I have enjoyed this book for several years and recently purchased a copy for a friend. I like how I can quickly find a bird by color using the edge of the pages (color coded). The information about the birds is useful and has enhanced my back yard bird feeding. It tells you whether or not a bird typically visits feeders. It lists several species in more than one section in case you are seeing them in another season or male vs female. It also shows the juvenile version of many species. So far I have been able to identify all of the birds I've seen at home.

Love this book series by Stan Tekiela! I have purchased the Illinois version for myself, as I live in Illinois, and then the Missouri version because I am frequently birding in Missouri. I purchased the Texas version for my mom, and when I went to visit her, I was stunned to find that the Texas book is almost twice as thick as my Illinois! I also got the Pennsylvania one for my aunt and another MO one for a friend. I can't say enough about how easy they are to use - it's like identifying birds for dummies - they are sorted by color, then size, and similar birds are listed with the ways to tell them apart, and what they like to eat and if they'll come to your home feeders, what the females and young look like, etc. Whether you are a new or experienced birder, you will love to have this book handy!

We have a copy of Birds of South Dakota for our house there, and since we are now spending so much time in Missouri, we had to get a more wide-ranging bird guide than what is available through in-state resources. Love the color-coded thumb guides along the edge, so that we don't have to flip through the entire book looking for a specific bird.The seller shipped the book in a reasonable amount of time, and the book arrived intact. I did notice that the book was not cut correctly, so must assume that it was a "damaged" run during printing. Would have been nice to know this beforehand.

Love this book! The organization is great (color coded), the descriptions are outstanding. I love how the author compares and contrasts similar birds. I also like the specific migration map on each page. This is a fantastic buy! I bought the same book (for another state) for a friend! She loves it too!

As a new transplant to Missouri, I was searching for a way to learn about the new birds that abound here. This book fit the bill perfectly. Small, easy-to-carry size. Birds grouped by major color of both the male and the female. Great pictures. The best part are the "notes" at the bottom of each bird description which provide fascinating facts. I definitely recommend this book!

Arranged by the color of the bird, this book is a quick guide to those birds you see in the backyard on the feeders. It is small, fitting easily into your hands or in a hiking bag. My mom and I use this guide often and she has even taken it to school for elementary students to reference.

Have been trying to identify the birds on my backyard feeder. Found this on Amazon and it is a great book for the amateur birder. The full color photos are excellent and the book is small enough to fit in a cargo pocket for easy access while hiking and bird watching. I liked it so much bought another for a friend.

I have three daughters ages 11, 10, and 9. We took turns reading chapters aloud from this Kindle e-book. It was a lot of fun! And while I can understand some reviewer's concerns with issues of the kids trusting strangers, etc., those are great times to have conversations with your kids about those issues. What we loved about this book was how the author wove in so many fun facts about America, and all the quirky places to visit! So many funny moments! When Coke finally "did the dump" was the best!! The situations the kids found themselves in were definitely dangerous, but it was great to see them learn to work together, and survive. I highly recommend this book series as a read-aloud, or for an older child (9-12) to read themselves. We're looking forward to reading the next installment!

I was very disappointed with this book. My 9 year old read it and loved it. She started reading the second one and thought it was too scary. I just read this first one. The two kids get into a car with a stranger and are told not to tell their parents or police about what they are doing. They spend the entire book with adults trying to kill the kids and the kids possibly trying to kill the adults (in self defense). I found it really disturbing. All the while the parents were oblivious. September 9, 2011, the Donnor Party and other random kid inappropriate references were made. I really don't think it is appropriate for children at all.

The book was ok. I love the author, so I was a little disappointed in the storyline. Characters were never really developed and the plot never really unfolded.

The museum of Pez, the Donner party museum, the singing sand, the spam museum, and the largest ball of twine, I knew for the first time.Traveling with the McDonalds, especially with Coke and Pepsi, and Rand McNally road atlas makes me feel I'm driving all the way across the US.This book is written for kids age 8-12, and I'm 80 years old retired man!!

Ok, I admit it. . . I love preteen books. Usually only a little ugly language, and that is mild. Adventure fantasy is my Grandma thing. Reading to my grandsons or just to myself is so fun. In this one all the weird places are real, who knew a giant ball of twine would fascinate me. Maybe it's just me, but finding strange in the real world was a blast. So if you are 8 or 68 give this one a try.

I am a schoolteacher and originally bought this book because my brother who is in elementary recommended it. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it to my class of six graders. They have laughed and learned a lot. They even enjoyed it so much that they asked if I could read the next one in the series. I highly recommend this book to adults and kids.

I teach 5th grade and all of my students know who Dan Gutman is. They have read most of his books before coming into my class. This series is great for 4th and 4th graders because it's not too easy but a quick and fun read. Boys and girls alike love this series. The kids love that the main characters names are Coke and Pepsi McDonald and that they can go on the computer to see all the places the twins stop. The book has great action, a dynamic twin duo and fun places to learn about as the McDonald twins try to avoid being killed as they ride along with their parents in a RV. I have read all the books in The Genius Files series and would highly recommend the books!

My son likes the books but to many attempted murders makes the series dark and unrealistic.

They take the standard position that Governor Louis Mouttet was suffering from some sort of mental instability, a narrative that was supported by survivor Edouard L'Heurre, the Governor's Secretary, that later authors such as Ernest Zebrowski refute by using scientific logic and deduction. Recreating the events of May, 1902 A thrilling, suspenseful real-life tragedy that claimed 30,000 lives, the eruption of Mount Pelee is a story that, like a sleeping volcano, refuses to lie dormant.

When I started reading this book I had no idea about the history of Martinique and its volcano, Pele'e. It is a fascinating glimpse into the French Colonial West Indies of 1902.I liked the author's day by day documentation of everyday life in St. Pierre, Martinique interspersed with the background stirrings of Pele'e.This is the story of the actual people - heroes and fools-who lived in this Caribbean Paradise until it turned into hell.

A factual, well researched and well written book. And even though I know every page is true, it's still positively unbelievable!! The unbelievable power of nature, and the unbelievable reactions of the humans in its wake . . . I will never, ever forget this book!!

Considering that more than 30,000 people died, and that it happened in the 20th century, you'd think Mt. Pelee's eruption would be more famous. Anyway, this book, one of the very few I know of that is entirely about this incident, is a fascinating look into the lives of people on a peaceful Caribbean island and a horrifying account of Pelee's awakening and the catastrophe that gave its name to a whole class of volcanic eruptions. I literally could not stop reading until I finished it.

For fast-paced excitement, you cannot beat The Day the World Ended, which is a day-by-day account of the 1902 volcano, starting on the 2nd of May 1902 and ending on the 8th, that weaves into this time several strong human interest stories. It was written in 1969, 67 years after the eruption, when the authors could still find a few people close to those times to interview. I get the feeling it was based very much on interviews, which gives it an immediacy not as apparent in the other two books: The Last Days of St. Pierre by Ernest Zebrowski and La Catastrophe by Alwyn Scarth. If you can only read one book, make it this one. it reads like a novel.The cost of this approach is that we cannot be sure all the stories the authors heard were accurate, so we will never know if some of the stories told here, like the placing of troops to stop people leaving the town are true. But for a feeling of impending doom, this book creates the atmosphere perfectly.

This book was fantastic!! Since it happened over 100 years ago I was only vaguely aware of the story! This book bought in the human element to the disaster!! Very well written and full of information!!

This is a very well written account of the devastating eruption of Mt Pelee on the island of Martinique. It catalogs the politics of the times there and how a variety of human and geographical variables contributed to such a poor response to this disaster. I had a paperback version which I decided to replace with a hardcover version.

I REALLY wanted to like this. I took one look at it and realized it wasn't anything like his videos. His videos are hit and miss - some are funny, some miss the mark and he takes too long to get to the various punchlines. I love his sarcasm and the way he's able to make a point...hitting below the belt...while remaining in character. But the book somehow doesn't reflect his personality. It comes across dry and pedantic.

I just got this book yesterday and neglected my family to read it! I couldn't stop. His Religiously Unreligious chapter had me laughing until I cried. SO glad I got it. It's going to be the gift I give my friends this year. I hope he writes a non satirical one next. I appreciate his serious side as much as I do his comedy!

JP Sears is very funny but a whole book of basically the same thing keeps me from giving this more stars.

I love this guy. He delivers insightful commentary on the world with such subtle humor that some people can't tell if he is serious or not. Hint: this book is sarcasm at its finest. Especially the chapter on doing drugs (because I cant spell ayushasa ) as a fast pass to spiritual enlightenment. Buy the book.

Good information, easy to understand. Only reason for 4 stars is at this point it is starting to be a little bit dated since the book is from 2001. ex. this book says not to feed raw meat or bone. However, most things about ferret care don't change, and overall it was very helpful.

Boring and same old material

I am a Professional Pet Sitter and I bought this book to learn more about Ferrets. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more information.

This book had a lot of good information in it but, wished it would have a little more involving how to litter train.

Not a ferret owner yet! I found this to be very informative and lots of good advice. I do believe this helped me to take excellent care when I do get one. I personally want to thank the author!

The author has highlighted some interesting things to look out for while caring for a pet ferret. I enjoyed reading about the common behaviors of pet ferrets that may appear strange to new owners as well as the chapter on what to look out for when planning the diet of your pet ferret.

This book was good information and of course great subject. We love our 5 ferrets.

Has everything I needed to know about the care of my fuzzy !

My son is 4.5, but he reads at closer to a first grade level. He's obsessed with space so I bought him this book (his 4th space book). This is the perfect reading level for him. He handles the words really well with little help. The pictures are very nice, the print is big, and the information is right at his level. A few facts about each of the plants and other topics.

Perfect explanations even goes into the seasons. The illustrations are beautiful! I love that the martians have a penial eye lol. But I would reccomend this it is a great teaching tool and it's a great price!

As expected! I originally borrowed it from my local library and I knew I had to have a copy for my family. Simple yet very informative. My four year old was engaged throughout the entire book.

I bought this book for a child who has a hard time sitting still and reading. The words are large and neat, and it's written in an interesting manner.

My grandson loves anything about space. This is an excellent book as it teaches young people about space and helps their reading skills as well.

My son liked it. He is in the 4th grade so it may have been a little easy for him to read. I want him to improve his reading skills. Still it is a good book to any child that wants to learn more about space.

And then there's Warm Pig's Head, which extreme chef Anthony Bourdain describes in his introduction as "so Goddamn amazing that it borders on religious epiphany." Here, too, are four recipes for lamb's brains, a commodity that Henderson admits is illegal in both the U.S. and England. Home chefs will encounter difficulties in obtaining other ingredients as well. Blood Cake and Fried Eggs calls for a quart of fresh pig's blood, and Soft Roes on Toast requires delicate white sacs of herring semen. Sprinkled among these challenging dishes, however, are more accessible fare: Kid and Fennel, Mussels Grilled on a Barbecue, and Radishes to Accompany Duck or Goose, wherein both the radish and its leaves are added to the bird's jus. Simply remarkable. Fergus is a genius who is responsible for the sort of seismic shift in cooking that we can thank Alice Waters for: he is a culinary God. This book is a must have for every chef (your grandmother won't know what to do with it, or already does and you know she does as well.) it's not for the once a week kitchen warrior, but if you want to impress your friends and influence their dining out it is an excellent coffee table book - though you'll be tempted to try the recipes, as well you should. Thank you, Fergus, for your gift to the ðŸŒŽ you're one of my heros for this.

We, as a society have depended on supermarket cuts of protein- beef, pork, chicken etc... and we have forgotten some of the pieces of protein that our ancestors relied on to feed their families. This book helps us get back to the cuts of protein that are tasty, full of wonderful fat and exceptional eating. Offal is a word that has lost meaning in our society. This book brings it back to the table and more.With the economy in the state that it's in, buying offal is another way of feeding the family right and for decent prices.Tongue, pigs feet, ox tail, pork belly, pigs tail & all the wonderful pieces of protein that have been forgotten.Fergus Henderson has brought back many recipes that my family used to cook, and living here in Miami, FL, I have access to many parts of the animal that many of the rest of the country does not have.This is a great book, with excellent antidotes, excellent, easy to follow recipes and it's fun to learn about parts of the animal that you rarely find in the typical supermarket.Pork belly is a daily food item in my house now that I've learned easy ways to prepare it and I don't have to worry about chemicals going into my family's mouth from cured bacon.Good book, good read, good eating education. This is an excellent book for those interested in the character of food and taste. It describes the (unfortunately) fast disappearing cooking of the old and less affluent days. I see this as the equivalent of English "Soul-Food". Hard times force creativity! Prior to modern times, people used the whole beast, all parts of available vegetables, throwing away the minimum. Slow cooking, coaxing flavours and the "terroir" from the ingredients. Maybe the terrible reputation English food had came from the American troops turning up in England from 1942 onwards. England had been under siege for years at that point, importing only fuel and munitions and other essentials, forcing people to eat local traditional foods. Sheep that were no good for wool any longer were eaten, chicken that didn't lay, were "retired" and eaten. All of the cabbage was cooked, including the tough outer leaves. So old, strong flavoured mutton, stewed cabbage, rabbit, pidgeon - gamey foods were a shocking contrast to the abundant great foods in the USA. The English needed to recall the historical roots of their cooking. I like to think "The Whole Beast", brings them back with some modern and international twists. Lovingly and enigmatically.Fergus Henderson has written and listed a fascinating collection of recipes and interestingly in a strange and quixotic tone. Deciphering the text and his meaning is fun. It makes one think and search more deeply for the character of the dish, more successfully than simply listing out steps in a recipe. The one big problem or challenge, is finding the raw materials in the U.S. But it is worth the trouble. Full marks!

For me there is nothing scary about cold lamb's brains on toast or crispy pig's tails. I grew up in a gourmet teaching kitchen where lunch was left overs from classes including such wonders as sweetbreads, kidney pie and fish roe. When Bill Cosby came out with a routine about the Chicken Heart that ate Chicago - we ate chicken hearts and loved them - craved them!So a book with nose to tail eating is not going to make me squirm - it is going to make me drool! and such a well done book. The recipes are in a simple format under the headings Stocks, Soup, Salads, Starters, Lamb's Brains and Sweetbreads, Meat, Birds and Game, Fish and Shellfish, Vegetables, Dressings sauces and Pickles, Puddings and Savories, and Baking.I find this book a good cross over for those who wish to learn more about using the whole animal - yet need to do this in baby steps. Recipes include "less threatening" cross overs such as Beans and Bacon, Roast Pork Loin with Turnips, Garlic and Anchovies.With the exception of breads and some sugar in the dessert section, all the ingredients are healthy choices - animal fat, olive oil and real butter. I found this book through the [...] under their thumbs up book reviews. I have yet to buy a book from that recommendation list that has not become a favorite of mine - this book included.After making the fish pie, sweetbreads and Boiled Beef and dumplings, I have added a trip to Fergus Henderson's restaurant to my "things to do before I pass" list. It doesn't hurt that the restaurant happens to be overseas :-)
