The Message of the Prophets: A Survey of the Prophetic and Apocalyptic Books of the Old Testament, by J. Daniel Hays

Review

“In this volume, Hays provides his readers with a superb overview of the message and significance of the Old Testament prophets. After introducing prophetic literature in general, Hays guides his readers through each prophetic book. Numerous clear images and helpful sidebars add to the richness of this book. He includes features like suggestions for further reading, discussion questions, and writing assignments that make the book ready-made for classroom use. Hays takes a number of the complicated issues of prophetic literature and provides a clear explanation of this important part of the Old Testament.” -- Michael A. Grisanti, PhD“To the burgeoning interest in the Old Testament prophets and the recent literature reflecting that interest must be added this magnificent overview of the men and their writings that make up a major part of the Old Testament canon. Although presupposing up-to-date scholarship on the prophets in a technically accurate fashion, Hays spares the beginning student the morass of argument pro and con on various issues, preserving instead the crucial facts and facets of the prophets' messages in their historical and cultural contexts. The photographs and other visual assets greatly enhance the beauty and reader-friendliness of the work, making it, with its other virtues, the finest volume of its kind. Highly recommended!” -- Eugene H. Merrill, PhD“The Message of the Prophets is an excellent introduction to the prophets of the Old Testament. From the attractive and inviting format, with photographs, maps, and sidebars, to the very fair and even-handed treatment of controversial issues, this book will be of great benefit to any who are seeking to get an understanding of this complex but vital field. The introductory overview is careful and complete, the writing style is clear and engaging, and the contents of the books are effectively summarized without becoming pedantic. In view of all these factors, I predict that this book will become a standard text in the coming years.” -- John N. Oswalt“J. Daniel Hays gives the students a front-row seat into the world of the prophets. Students will learn to appreciate the struggles of the prophets, their literature, and their theology, plus gain insight into their poetry and eschatological messages. Hays traces their messages and highlights the key theological themes in each major literary unit in both the major and minor prophets. The text is attractively designed with either a large illustrative picture or a sidebar on almost every page. Students will love the beautiful pictures that show what a high place, an olive tree, or a Bedouin tent looks like, plus the maps will raise their consciousness of the land where these events took place. The sidebars explain theological terms, an ancient custom, or an important archaeological discovery that is mentioned in the verses under discussion. The text flows smoothly and is spiced up with modern illustrations and numerous connections to the New Testament.” -- Gary Smith

The Message of the Prophets provides the reader with a clear understanding of God’s word in the Old Testament. Whether someone is a new believer or has been for a while, this will create a desire for the Old Testament like never before. There is a vast amount of useful information to help the reader interpret the different literary types. Additionally, high-quality images of biblical archaeology associated with the text, provides the reader with vivid details and a visual understanding. The background, historical and geographical information, as well as the exegesis of the text makes this book as useful as an encyclopedia, bible dictionary, and commentary combined for understanding the Old Testament Prophets. What makes this book stand out from among the rest is the consistent dedication to providing a thorough interpretation of the Prophets’ messages.

I'm having to write a detailed critical review for class on this book. I much prefer Amazon's little review box to a 7 page word document :) Dr. Hays makes learning about the OT prophets a joy. He uses a recurring theme of "Repent, Judgement, and Hope". It's a great book and every Christian should own it. There is no excuse for not learning about some of the most importat people of the Old Testament. They are very relevant for today.

If you have been wondering how the OT books come together and integrate into a cohesive and noncontradictory whole, this is indeed a book that will help you to see the threads that pass through all of the books. I believe there is a definite need for books that educate people in how to read the Bible for what it is, a convoluted collection of books of every style imaginable written by dozens of authors over the course of thousands of years. It is not easy for any average individual, even if they take an interest, to know what they're reading. Books like this can make all the difference in the world.

Hay's book is a great survey of the OT prophets. I had to read it for an OT Survey class and write a 7-page review of the book for class. It is well organized and systemically laid out. Each chapter gives background information regarding the historical aspect of the book and the prophet's life and circumstances; a summary of the message; and where indicated, a discussion of different theological viewpoints, issues, and problems. Especially helpful is the first division of the book, where the author discusses how to read the prophets; literary considerations; and the role of the prophets. Lots of colorful sidebars and discussions about people, places, and geography pertaining to the era of the prophets. Pleasant reading as well! I enjoyed this book as a student new to many of the ideas in this book!

Use it as a teaching resource... ALL those walking though this book with me love it! It gives you a taste/glimpse/history/ and yet a very thorough look into every major and minor prophet. The format is easy read and understanding for the average student. A must have in your library.

This book is great for studying the Old Testament Prophets. The course I am taking this semester will allow me to understand the prophets message and gain understanding about them. I would recommend this book to all who want to know more about the prophets of Old and gain knowledge so as not to fall into traps of the enemy

I have only read the first five chapters and this book is very informative and easy to read. Thank you Mr. Hays for a quality book that is easy to read and contains a lot of information to assist one better understand the Bible and the times in which the different books were written. The physical book itself is of GREAT quality, printed on glossy pages, easy to the touch and doesn't smear, smudge or make your hands dry and chapped.

Packed with information concerning cultural and historical context of the prophets in the OT, this book is a must have for any serious Bible student. Of course, it may be for you as it was for me—required textbook for class. Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed its treatment of the subject. It is easy to read and each chapter concludes with questions which are meant to stimulate thinking and reading comprehension. It is in my library forever. Great textbook!
