What the heck?? Cole does not fail to deliver a stunningly well-written and well-researched book in this fifth installment but I've got to say that all throughout reading this book, I had (and am still having) little tingling sensations of disappointment that the ball is being dropped on this series. Whether that is due to publisher or sales-manipulation type issues/pressures or not, who knows, but two things I do know is that 1) this book is disappointingly shorter than the first three and ends on literally, a mid-conversation cliff-hanger that had me wondering if my ebook was missing pages, and 2) Evie's little mental problems in this book has made this series take a sharp free fall towards run-of-the-mill.I'm tired of reading dime a dozen YA books that keep getting pumped out recently where the heroine craps out on the reader by being whiny, spoiled, selfish, weak, naive, unjustifiably egotistical, just plain mean, split personality, (insert more adjectives) just to stretch a series out. And no, I don't expect my YA heroine's to be perfect, but I do expect them to grow and mature as the series grows. So I'll just come right out and say it - are you ready for this? (Hope you're sitting down.) Evie has crapped out on us in this installment. Here, Evie's actions and thought processes over Jack and Aric stink of high school teenie-bopperism rather than a girl that has already been to true hell and back...and survived. No matter what age you are, when really, REALLY shi**y things happen to you, you grow up fast. I want a heroine I can stand behind. I want a heroine that I can look up to. I want a heroine that when I put the book down, I say to myself, "you know what? I'm going to try harder in my own real life because this damn amazing girl has inspired me." Not so, here in this book.I've read every book and novella Kresley Cole has ever published (I am TRULY a fan), and up until Arcana Rising, I would have said this was the best YA series I have ever read. Unfortunately, I'm not so sure anymore. That said, BECAUSE I am a major fan of Cole, I'm not going to give up on this series. Though I will no longer auto-buy this series (I'll be reading reviews before I purchase the next one), I will still eagerly await installment six.Evie, whether you want to or not, you're rumbling with the big boys. Put your big-girl knickers ON already, girl! You've got a lot of fans out here backing you and unlike you in this book, they're growing up, not regressing.
Meh. That's my first though when thinking about this book. Not good but not horrible. Definitely a filler book, which I can't stand. I get as an author you have to set things up but if you don't have enough material to have an actual plot line for a book, don't write it. Put the extra material in other books and make them longer. I wasn't a fan of the "cliffhanger" ending either. A baby? Really? So there's, what, 0 chance of happiness for Jack now? I have been Team Jack since day 1. But if Evie has the nerve to go back to Jack after everything she's said and done with Death, she's a royal bitch. And I don't even like Death that much. So Jack basically has no chance with Evie unless Death dies. And I have a feeling that's how the series is going to end. There's going to be something stupid and predictable with Life & Death's kid where the kid is the one to stop the games and bring life back to earth and for whatever reason, Death makes some noble sacrifice and died and because Jack is human and Evie is the winner of the game (or stops the game completely and other arcana get to live too) they get their happy ending. No. Just...no. I want her to end up with Jack but I am SO SICK OF LOVE TRIANGLES. Why does every YA book have to have a love triangle?! Why can't it be like Divergent where Tris loves Four and that's it. (Just don't end like the Divergent series did, please) Why does Evie have to keep going back and forth? And what gets me about all this crap with Death and Evie is that she would have never developed feelings for him if he hadn't kidnapped her and drilled into her head that she owes him love because he's loved her for so long and blah blah blah. She doesn't owe Death anything and if he had never kidnapped her and made her feel sorry for him, there wouldn't be any competition. And yet here we are with a baby on the way! Awesome! Wow! Do you have a clue what happens now? (Sorry, Hamilton brain)I don't hate Death. He actually grew on me in this book. I liked seeing him happy. I just wish it was with someone else. He didn't earn Evie's love, he guilt tripped her and deluded her into thinking she loves him.Yeah, my big grip with this book is mainly because I am Team Jack and was hoping for a nice reunion between them. But I don't see that happening unless Death dies. Which...part of me doesn't want him too because he's an interesting character. But then again part of me does because TEAM JACK.I know my review is one big Team Jack rant but honestly, that's because noting except Team Death stuff happened in this book! Why do certain books have to be one sided? We could have at least gotten more from Joules/Gabe/Finn! (Joules is actually my favorite character above all else!) Using their story as well as more Jackson would have broken up the monotony of chillen in Death's compound. There was so much hype for this book (because of the stellar cliffhanger of book 3!) so to finish this and be like-ok we are in basically the same place we started except now there is a baby on the way-was really disappointing. I am giving 3 stars instead of 2 only because the car ride with Joules, Gabe, Finn, Death, and Evie was the best!!!! I would literally to pay to watch a sitcom of just them hanging out. Also, Sol is awesome.Theories for book 5:-Matthew is shady as hell. He is either setting up Evie to win the game or to win the game for himself. I honestly can't tell if he is good or bad.-Grandma was up to something before she died.-Paul may be a minor arcana and playing everyone.-Paul may be the Hanged Man.-Paul may actually be Matthew! We don't know the extent of the Fool's powers. And when he was freeing Jack from the prison, Jack said for a second Matthew flashed into someone he didn't recognize. Paul had many opportunities to set things in motion for an outcome he wanted (killing Grandma, giving Evie a fake contraceptive shot and then telling her she was crazy). This all applies to the minor arcana/Hanged Man/ or Matthew in disguise theory. But Paul is definitely more of a major character than we think.-Jack is the Hanged Man (I think that's everyone's theory which is why I think it might not actually happen)-Evie's dad is the Hanged Man and going to make a come back.
