About the Author

The book itself arrived very quickly (2 days with free shipping) so I was very pleased. However, they have not updated their content to reflect the new AP Biology test standards. The text portion is great and summarizes concepts effectively. The questions, in contrast, focus too much on specific details and too little on the broader concepts. The new AP Biology test gives students specific details and asks them to connect this to other topics they have learned, but the questions in this test prep book come nowhere close to asking this. The free response sections are atrocious as well. Barron's is usually a standard and reputable test prep book, so I was surprised at the horrible quality of these prep questions. I suggest buying the Preparing for the Biology AP* Exam (School Edition) (Pearson Education Test Prep) book instead, where the questions and content accurately reflect what is found on the recent AP Biology exams.

I bought the 4th edition of this book back in October but dumped it because it seemed like it wasnâ€™t written for the new bio AP exam format. It had lots of material that wasnâ€™t on the exam and the practice tests were so NOT in line with the sample questions my teacher gave us that were from the new AP exam. Instead, I bought the Cliffs version and found it much, much better. Then I saw this 5th version of Barrons and the Amazon description said it was updated for the new exams. So I bought it because like Iâ€™m like the person you hate because I overkill studying. Updated? Hardly. Every page nearly word for word the same, including the exams which are so easy as to be nearly useless. Oh yeah, most stuff in plant chapter removed and chapter title for classification change to biological diversity. Too little change, too late.

If you're looking for a book that mimics the official test and provides lessons directly applicable to the official test then you're in the wrong place. This book may provide you with some bio knowledge but it won't help you really prepare for the questions. The AP test is a series of common sense and scenario-based questions that can't really be taught in a book, which may be good or bad depending on what kind of test-taker/studier you are. MC is based on paragraphs of given information and are "predict, give explanation, and what does graph/diagram show" types of questions, and FR are all application/lab questions that are the "justify, propose, and provide" types. That being said, the FR questions in this book are NOTHING like the actual test, but they're a good review for what you studied. As for the labs at the end, Cliffnotes is much better. I got a 5 on the test and the only thing I remember applying from prep books were some graph/diagrams in Barron's and some labs from Cliffnotes (please don't waste your time and read the whole book). To get a more realistic feel of the test, it's best to just view the official AP tests, scoring guidelines, and samples from previous years, as collegeboard releases them all online. <-- this also prepares you for time-management and what types of answers collegeboard looks for/how they score your test.The lack of actual test help isn't necessarily Barron's fault, it's just that this type of AP test is difficult to understand and study for.

As an AP Biology teacher, this is my favorite review book on the market. It's relatively well priced and the explanations of the content are pretty good. The practice questions don't always match up with the style that will be on AP exam, but if you are buying it help review or learn the material, it works well. And again, what a good price for a thick book!

This was a great review book - it went over important concepts in a very clear, direct manner and was well-organized. I paid attention throughout my AP Biology course in school and had a great teacher, then reviewed only by using this book, and I ended up getting a 5 on the test. I would definitely recommend this to those who want a good review book!

I have yet to receive my AP Biology score back yet, however, being on home hospital, this review truly helped me recover my memory on most subjects on the AP test! It tested my knowledge with multiple choice questions and with the FRQ questions as well.I would like to say that this test has helped me get a better score than I would have without it! (EDIT: I received a 4!!!)

The book itself is excellent: Barron makes it very easy to understand, and therefore, to study. However, there are a number of errors and typos. Some could be misleading because it happens on the practice question. I wonder is there a list of errors found and corrected?

Many errors on the practice quizzes and practice tests. On at least one occasion (model test #1 questions 61-62), the graph included has nothing to do with the content of the question it is linked to. I noted and was confused by other errors which have already been noted by other reviewers on this website. Other questions and their answers make assumptions which are not warranted by the amount of information given. For the most part, the grid-in examples and the free response question examples are vague and don't require the type of analysis required by the AP exam.It is nice that the Kindle version links the questions to their answers.
