Solid info here. Although I have a BFA, I'm a plein air novice. I found this book to provide information I needed to get my supplies together, get out there, determine my focus, and render an acceptable piece en plein air. Thanks, Stephen Doherty!
Informative guide to Plein air painting. Not a how-to book but very interesting to learn how accomplished artists approach the challenge of painting on site.
Excellent, comprehensive book for the beginning plein air artist and the master artist
This book is a great overview of Plein air painting concepts, techniques, materials (for all media) challenges and tips on working with challenges. I liked the way individual artists were highlighted showing their particular approach to Plein Air painting in their medium.
I'm a bit torn on this review. The book describes itself as a "guide to materials, concepts and techniques" so I expected a lot more detailed information about things like materials, concepts and techniques. In fact, the information is there but tends to be brief and/or only expanded upon in the numerous examples of various artists. While I enjoy the case study approach, this book was more of an expose of the artists themselves rather than the technique. It shows what they have done but not how - or at least minimally so. The book itself is oddly organized - historical context takes up the first 50 pages of so and then you get to things like materials. Woefully little is provided in terms of tips - and much of that is common sense such as dealing with insects or a brief overview of easel options. Subjects that could take an entire book of their own - like lighting or dealing with a constantly changing scene - are addressed but very briefly without much elucidation on the topic. Overall a nice book but misses the mark as a guide.
Nice book...good info , pictures etc. Easy reading, very enjoyable! ! :~}
As a beginning painter I found The Art of Plein Air Painting to be approachable, enjoyable, inspirational, and educational. The book is full of full color photos of completed paintings as well as some step-by-step process paintings and photo images of artists working in the field.Doherty's writing style is relaxed and unpretentious, inspiring and never boring. The book moves along at a just right pace. I read every word of this book spread out over about three weeks time and learned a lot from it and enjoyed it. It covers every aspect of issues specific to plein air painting as well as covering some general painting basics which can be used in the studio. I enjoyed the profiles of over 50 different artists in which they share some information about their personal choice of process and technique and about their own style so the book is not just showing the artwork of or the tips and tricks of author M. Stephen Doherty. Doherty is a painter with an MFA as well as having worked for American Artist magazine for over 30 years and is now editor of PleinAir magazine, so he has been in this field for decades and provides a great overview of plein air painting.Rating 5 stars = Love It. This book really tells you everything you need to know and it is made clear in the book and we already know already, that the next step is putting paint brush to canvas and getting to work, practicing and actually making art. The book will teach you everything you need to know, or you can read it as an armchair pleasure read, but if you want to get good at painting it takes hard work, discipline and practice. this one book and teach you a lot and enough to get started. Then it's time to get to work.There are two pages of resources at the back, books to read, blogs, websites and social media of the artist contributors. The book is indexed. The chapters are as follows: 1: "why paint outdoors" provides a good overview of what makes plein air painting unique. Chapter 2 tells the history of playing air painting with a focus on John Constable, Hudson River School, French Barbizon School, the French Impressionists, American Impressionist and 20th century outdoor painters. Chapter 3 is the learning process and information for beginners to encourage them. Chapter 4 is getting started which is about finding a location outdoors and simplifying your subject. Chapter 5 covers basics of tools materials and equipment which differs from studio only painting. Chapter 6 teaches techniques some of which applies also to studio painting such as using a viewfinder. Prepper sketches, toning the surface, the difference between indirect and direct painting, the difference with painting from photos, & urban landscapes. Chapter 7 addresses plein air events, pros and cons, different types of events and the purpose of the event, tips on connecting with potential buyers while at events, choosing subjects that may appeal to buyers and collectors, and when Artyst may choose to step back from attending events.
What I like about this "how to..." book on plein air painting is the mix of discussions on oil, pastel and water color painting. What I like a bit less is the relatively modest amount of detail for each subject. In any event, author/editor Stephen Doherty, includes a good selection of well-illustrated art and artists to make his points about location, times of day, light, equipment, etc. Overall, a decent, basic introduction to taking on this challenging way of painting.
